Port Kembla.

With one of Wollongong’s most prestigious beaches, one of the largest industrial complexes in Australia, and stunning views of the Five Islands Nature Reserve, Port Kembla is certainly a suburb to take notice of.

Located 10 kilometres south of Wollongong on the banks of Lake Illawarra, Port Kembla is a residential and industrial suburb with a thriving port that is considered one of the Illawarra’s key economic assets. Also along the banks of Lake Illawarra are the smaller suburbs of Warilla, Primbee, and Berkeley. The three residential hubs are just a stone’s throw away from stunning beaches, outdoor attractions, delicious wining and dining, and all other attractions that make the Shellharbour region such a popular destination.

Port Kembla attracts visitors and delights locals with its sprawling beachfront, quirky shopping district, and historic Hill 60. Hill 60 (also referred to as Port Kembla Lookout) is Port Kembla’s highest point and overlooks the picturesque Five Islands Nature Reserve, but what’s most attractive about Hill 60 is its place in Australian history. Hill 60 was the site of an underground tunnel system used during World War II for a coastal gun emplacement referred to as Illowra Battery. The tunnels still exist today and can be explored on foot.

For quirky boutique shopping and cafe culture, do as the locals do and head to Wentworth Street. Port Kembla’s popular shopping precinct on Wentworth Street is where the locals shop, dine, and delight in the buzzing atmosphere. For swimming and relaxing on one of the cleanest beaches in New South Wales and the longest beach in Wollongong, Port Kembla Beach is certainly worth a visit. Don’t miss an opportunity to dive into the Olympic-sized swimming pool that overlooks the beach.
