A seemingly sleepy suburb tucked away between Kogarah and Hurstville in Sydney’s St George region, easy-going Carlton has plenty to boast about. Carlton is one of the area’s most intriguing gems, its love for sports and the arts shines bright, as does its thriving multicultural community.
Shopfronts line either side of Carlton Train Station – some are eateries that nod to the area’s multiculturalism, while others offer services that cater to everyday needs. For a much wider variety, Hurstville, a major shopping and entertainment destination and business hub of the region are right next door, while St George Hospital and St George Private Hospital are within easy walking distance in neighbouring Kogarah. As are three train stations, including Carlton Train Station, that service the Illawarra line and will have you in the city within 30 minutes.
When in season, all eyes turn to Jubilee Stadium, the home ground for the much-loved rugby league team, St George Illawarra Dragons. Local pride is permanently etched along Park Street with the Walk of Fame featuring St George legends. But it’s not all about rugby league, during parts of the year, A-League becomes the focal point at Jubilee Stadium. Then there is the internationally acclaimed Shopfront Contemporary Arts Centre on Carlton Parade, a youth-led arts co-operative with a focus on performance and filming.
A place where families come to lay down roots, Carlton is filled with fenced-in double brick and weatherboard homes, with low-density apartments more prominent closer to the train line. Parks are sprinkled throughout, and schools are in abundance in Carlton and neighbouring suburbs. Nearby Georges River and the beaches of Botany Bay are the cherries on top of this highly desirable suburb.
